Tonight I’m even shorter on time than I was yesterday. Now for an express post about Eritrea.
Eritrea is a tiny nation perched on the Horn of Africa neighbouring Djibouti to the south. Eritrea was reluctantly part of Ethiopia until it gained independence after the Eritrean War of Independence in 1993. Despite the end of fighting This war technically continued until 2018.
Even though Eritrea gained independence it’s been a pretty rough ride. A Democratic constitution was drawn up in 1997 but never implemented. Today Eritrea is governed by a brutal a one-party dictatorship in which free elections have never been held. The regime has been blamed for wide-ranging abuses of human rights including torture. Yet this appears to have not captured the attention of the International community in the same way as countries such as North Korea.
Let’s hope Eritrea’s future is brighter than its recent past.
